One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned over the past two years is how important it is to take care of ourselves. As a small business owner, your health is your business’s health. You are the backbone of your business—it thrives or struggles with you.
We’ve definitely been guilty of putting ourselves last, especially when things get busy. It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind of serving customers, making cakes, and doing everything you can to keep the wheels turning. And while all of that is super important, it can’t come at the cost of your own well-being. Trust me, we’ve learned that the hard way.
So, here’s the deal: take care of yourself. Prioritize your mental and physical health. Schedule in that rest, set time for self-care, go for that much dreaded gym session or walk, make sure you’re living, not just working yourself to the bone.
The Importance of Sleep and Rest
We hear about the importance of sleep every time but what even is that for small business owners? Lol! Another lesson we've learnt is you don’t always have to be "ON" to succeed. In fact, trying to be constantly busy is a recipe for burnout. If you’re like us, you might think that pushing through with no sleep and no breaks is just part of the hustle. But I can tell you now: sleep is NOT optional. It’s essential.
In our early days, we hustled hard—like, really hard. Late nights, barely any sleep, weekends that blurred into one big blur of exhaustion. It felt like the only way to stay on top of everything was to keep going, even when we could barely keep our eyes open. But that took a serious toll on my body. I started to feel all the late nights... just straight sluggish, self-conscious, and downright miserable. I’d avoid customers just because I felt too run down to face them. And my confidence? It was at an all-time low.
We weren’t eating well, either. Late-night snacks were usually whatever was quick and easy—hello uber eats takeaways! But as time went on, and we found more routine with the shop, we started to take a step back. We began prioritizing our health again, joining Brown Pride Gym, squeezing in workouts, eating better, and finally getting that much-needed sleep.
It’s honestly been a game-changer. Now, we’re stronger, fitter, and happier—and it’s all thanks to making a bit of room for life outside of the shop. It’s not perfect, and work will always have its tough moments, but the balance we’ve found is SO much better than when we first started.
A Healthy You = A Healthy Business
The bottom line? If you’re healthy, your business will be healthier. The same goes for your relationships, your family, and everything else you’re a part of. Taking care of yourself isn’t just about you—it’s about everyone and everything you care about. So, if you’re running a business (or doing anything, really), remember that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Look after yourself, because you deserve it, and your business will thank you for it!
